VCSO Hiring Process

The Victoria County Sheriff's Office is committed to "Excellence in Law Enforcement" which means all applicants will be subject to a thorough screening process and background check. Sheriff's Office employees are exposed to confidential and law enforcement sensitive documents. All potential VCSO applicants are expected to be truthful and demonstrate integrity and professionalism in all aspects of the hiring process. If applicants fail in this, they will be disqualified from the hiring process. Each step in the hiring process must be successfully completed by the applicant in order for him or her to proceed to the next step in the process.


Step 1:  Complete TCOLE Personal History statement and sworn declaration

  • Fill out the personal history statement completely and take time to answer each question as honestly as possible.
  • The TCOLE application will be used to determine if you meet the requirements set forth by the Sheriff's Office.
  • All positions that require a peace officer license or jailer's license (with the exception of Medical positions) will be contacted by the Training Unit for physical agility testing, written testing and interview board.

NOTE: Those that meet the qualifications for a medical position will be contacted for an interview board only.


Step 2:  Applicant will be contacted for physical agility test, written test, and Interview Board

Physical Agility Test, applicant must successfully complete to continue the hiring process

I. Physical Agility Test Requirements for Positions requiring Peace Officers License

  • Obstacle course must be completed in 1 minute 30 seconds or less

  • Obstacle course must be completed in 45 seconds or less

II. Written Test, applicant must successfully complete to continue the hiring process
  • The written test consists of four timed sections covering Reading and Comprehension, Arithmetic, Grammar and Incident Report Writing
  • Applicants must pass the entire test with a score over 70%
  • This is an 8th grade aptitude test. Study guides are available at the Sheriff's Office or online.
III. The applicant will then be interviewed by a panel of VCSO supervisors and administrators.
  • The panel will ask the applicant situational questions
  • The panel will also ask questions regarding work experience and background
  • If the applicant is approved by the interview board, the applicant will be referred to an investigator to check the applicants background

 


Step 3: A Background Investigation will be done on Applicant
  • Background investigations take on average 3 to 6 weeks
  • The applicant must ensure references and past employers are aware they will be contacted
  • Driving history, credit history, criminal history, and references will be checked
  • Applicants must be referred by the background investigator and the Chief Deputy in order to continue in the hiring process

Step 4:  Command Staff Interview
  • Applicants will again be interviewed by the division captain who supervises the area for which the applicant applied and if approved extended a contingent offer of employment
  • Applicants extended a contingent job offer will be given hire date IF they pass a physical, drug screen, and psychological examination
